The Brief History of the Chengam Ramakrishna Math
- The spiritual city of Tiruvannamalai is flooded with the blessings of Lord Shiva and is spiritually alive. It is an important temple city in Tamil Nadu. Many Rishis and Sages who attained liberation /moksha lived here.
- Chengam town is 30 km from Thiruvannamalai. It has been 42 years since the start of the private organisation Sri Ramakrishna Trust. The core young members who were behind the starting of the Trust were, Quilam Natarajan, Sri Pandurangan, and Sri Ramamoorthy.
- They started doing service activities in the name of Sri Ramakrishna in Chengam from 1975 – 76. These devotees started a nursery and primary school in 1978 to support their service activities. It has become a higher secondary school now.
- This Chengam Sri Ramakrishna Trust convened a state-level devotees' conference in 2002 at Chengam.
- At that time of the conference, laid the foundation stone for Sri Ramakrishna temple on the nearby land purchased exclusively for the establishment of the ashram.
- The Foundation stone was laid by two great Swamis of our Order; Srimat Swami Smaranandaji Maharaj and Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj.
- A beautiful Sri Ramakrishna temple was built and dedicated on 28 November 2010 by the same two great Swamis.
- After the consecration of the temple, they repeatedly appealed to the headquarters to take over the Chengam centre as a branch of the Holy Order.
- The Trustees fixed the date for rededication (after 12 years) of the temple i.e., 28. Nov.2022. Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj also gave his consent to attend the function.
- In August 2022 our headquarters accepted the long-pending request of 'Sri Ramakrishna Trust, Chengam' to take over it, as one of the branches of Math centres.
- The Revered General Secretary Maharaj appointed Swami Tatprabhananda as in charge, to look after the transfer and registration of properties of Chengam Sri Ramakrishna Trust, in the name of Belur Math.
- At that time the Swami was serving in Madurai. He left Madurai on the morning of September 12, 2022, on the orders of the headquarters and reached Chengam ashrama at 4.00 pm.
- The Swami was accorded a grand welcome and a brief reception meeting was held in the prayer hall. Around 200 devotees and students gathered in the reception.
- On October 13, 2022, the swami took over as Adhyaksha of the Centre, as per the guidance of Belur Math.
- As the rededication ceremony of the Temple was already fixed, the handing over ceremony of the Trust and the opening of the new Math centre in its place were combined with them.
- On November 28, 2022, these functions were celebrated with much fanfare.
- On the morning of 27.11.2022, the Mantra Diksha programme was held. A variety of cultural programmes were rendered by our school students in the evening between 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. About 3000 parents and devotees witnessed the cultural programmes.
- On the morning of the Consecration, from 5.00 am., Ganapathy, Vasthu, etc., were performed by local prohibits. Special puja for Sri Ramakrishna started at 7.30 am and continued by Sri Ramakrishna Homam.
- The Swamis and devotees carrying the Sacred water, went around the temple with bhajans and dances. After three rounds it was taken atop the main gopuram and consecrated the temple by 09.30 am.
